The world of imperial palace intrigue continues! TOHO Animation has just released the official main trailer for the second season of "The Apothecary Diaries." The announcement brings a breath of fresh air to the successful adaptation of the light novel series by Natsu Hyūga and Touko Shino.

Well-known voice actress Asami Seto joins the ensemble as Shisui. Talented artist Lilas Ikuta presents the opening song, "Hyakkaryōran." This title marks her first solo work for a TV anime. Ikuta, who is also active as the singer ikura in the band YOASOBI, lends the series a special musical touch.

The second season begins on January 10th at 11:00 p.m. Japan time on Nippon TV's FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT program block. The series spans two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll has secured the international streaming rights and will make the episodes available shortly thereafter.

Plot and Background

J-Novel Club publishes the novel series in digital form and describes the story:
"In the East lies a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and serving women live in a large complex known as the hougong, the Rear Palace. Maomao, a low-ranking girl raised in a small town by her apothecary father, never imagined the Rear Palace would have anything to do with her—until she was kidnapped and sold into service there.
Despite her plain appearance, Maomao has a quick wit, a sharp mind, and an extensive knowledge of medicine. It is her secret, until she meets a palace denizen at least as perceptive as she is: the head eunuch, Jinshi. He sees through Maomao’s façade and makes her a lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favorite consort… so she can food-test the lady’s meals for poison!"
The first season of the series started in October 2023 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. J-Novel Club publishes the English translation of the Light Novels, while Square Enix Manga & Books handles the manga adaptation.
