Sony Interactive Entertainment Appoints Hideaki Nishino as President and CEO

Effective April 1, 2025, Hideaki Nishino will assume the role of President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Concurrently, the Sony Group Corporation is undergoing comprehensive personnel changes within its leadership ranks, including the promotion of Hiroki Totoki to President and CEO of the parent company.
These decisions mark a strategic turning point, leveraging years of expertise and consolidating internal competencies.
Strategic Realignment of the Sony Group
Hideaki Nishino, already CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group since June 2024, now combines both leadership functions. In this dual role, he is responsible not only for the technological development of PlayStation products, but also for commercial operations, including hardware marketing and third-party developer relations. Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group, remains responsible for First-Party content development and reports directly to Nishino. "Technology and creativity are our greatest strengths," Nishino emphasized in an official statement.
"We will continue to grow the PlayStation community – through IP expansion and cutting-edge technological innovations."
In parallel, Hiroki Totoki, the current Chairman of SIE, is ascending to the role of CEO of the Sony Group, replacing Kenichiro Yoshida, who will assume the position of Chairman of the corporation. Totoki, who has served as President and COO of the Sony Group since April 2023, is considered the architect of key growth strategies, including investments in semiconductor technology and content IP. Yoshida praised him as a "visionary who will shape the future of the company."
Career Paths and Corporate Responsibility
Nishino's career at Sony began in 2000. Prior to his appointment as Platform Business Group CEO, he served as Senior Vice President, leading the development of PlayStation ecosystems, from user experiences to service technologies.
His expertise in cross-platform integration is seen as key to the planned expansion of PlayStation IPs into new media formats, including series productions like The Last of Us.
Lin Tao, the current CFO of SIE, is transitioning to the Sony Group as CFO. Her succession at SIE remains open for the time being.
Totoki praised Tao as a "critical driver of SIE's success" and underscored her role in strategic financial planning. The change reflects the prioritization of internal talent development, a hallmark of the corporation.
PlayStation in Focus
Under Nishino's leadership, the Platform Business Group is expected to strengthen the technological foundation for future PlayStation generations, while Hulst's Studio Business Group will develop content across platforms – from consoles to PC to film projects.
This duality reflects the company's core philosophy: "Meaningful connections for millions of players" through a symbiotic connection of hardware and content.
The restructuring of the Sony Group also underscores the growing importance of the gaming sector. With Nishino and Hulst as newly appointed "Officers in charge," the Game & Network Services Business is strategically closer to central corporate decisions.
Shinji Sashida, the new CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, complements this direction with his responsibility for Imaging & Sensing solutions – key technologies for future VR and AR innovations. The gaming magazine Gematsu reported on this.
A New Chapter with Time-Tested Precision
The handover of leadership positions is occurring seamlessly, supported by decades of corporate culture.
Jim Ryan, who retired in March 2024 after 30 years as SIE CEO, left behind a stabilized ecosystem that Totoki further solidified as Interim CEO. Yoshida emphasizes that the carefully planned transition is intended to "secure long-term growth."
"This era combines continuity with the courage to innovate," sums up an industry analyst. "Sony is betting on leaders who understand technology and storytelling as a single unit – a formula that has made PlayStation a cult classic."
With Nishino at the helm and Totoki in the corporate chair, the focus remains on one motto: Innovation through experience.
